“me in the new world order” (2020)

Self-portrait, April/May 2020. I’ve painted since I was twelve, first obsessively then sporadically through the years. When quarantine hit, I couldn’t form words. Painting helped me meditate while building layer upon layer of my face, forced me to literally look at myself, my face for hours. On my own terms, and not as a floating head on a Zoom tile. COVID-19 acutely reminded me of my face—my mouth, nose, eyes—and my body—my lungs, my status as alive and breathing well. And yet I also felt disembodied by our virtual world, reduced to pixels against Zoom backgrounds and technical difficulties. I painted this while quarantined in my New Yawk<3
